Highland Burgundy Red

A Scottish variety dating back to the 1930s that was named after being served to the Duke of Burgundy in the Savoy in London to add some colour to his meal. They are long and ovular in shape with a bright red skin surrounding a floury red flesh with a distinct ring of white around the edge, just under the skin. With a fluffy texture they make colourful roast potatoes and interesting pink mash. They are also good for baking, chipping and steaming – for best results keep the skin on to retain the vibrancy of their colour.

Being one of our colourful varieties, Highland Burgundy Red is rich in antioxidants, particularly anthocyanin which lays claim to a variety of health benefits including improved cardiovascular health, dementia prevention and increased longevity. As well as the fact that potatoes are very low in sugar and salt and are gluten- and fat-free this variety is definitely one to try if you are looking for a healthy meal option.

* Please note: these are not certified seed potatoes. They’re not sprayed with chemicals so will grow if given the chance but we’ve grown them for eating. We recommend planting them in your oven, not in the garden! *
