About Morghew

We grow potatoes worth talking about.

A family estate in Kent that decided ordinary was not good enough. Thirty heritage varieties, grown properly and sold direct, so the potato on your plate has a name and a place it came from.

The short version

The supermarket potato is a compromise: bred to store, to travel, and to look the same in every bag. We grow ours the way they used to be grown — in real soil, by name — and sell them straight to the people who cook them.

Our story

It started with a variety nobody sold

Morghew grew potatoes for supermarkets for years — chasing yield, uniformity, and contracts that got tighter every season. The margins kept shrinking and the varieties kept narrowing to whatever stored longest and looked best in a bag.

So we started growing a handful of heritage varieties for the family table instead — potatoes with real flavour that had quietly disappeared from the shops because they came out came out too knobbly, too varied or didn't yield enough for a packer.

Chefs started asking. Then their friends. Before long we were lifting Pink Fir Apple and La Ratte for kitchens across Kent and London. Morghew, and The Potato Shop, grew out of that, into what it is today.

How we work

Direct, honest, and a little bit particular

We sell straight to the people who cook: home kitchens, restaurants, delis and farm shops. No supermarkets, no middlemen, no anonymous sacks.

That means we can grow varieties for flavour instead of shelf life.

  • Sold direct, never through supermarkets
  • Grown for flavour, not for shelf life
  • Honest about how we farm, always
  • Family-run, on the same land for generations to come
