The Potato Shop Logo

With the announcement of another Lockdown across the UK we'd like to let you know that our services will remain unchanged. The way things will be operated is going to be slightly different, with a rota of staff working from home where possible to bring down the number of people present and continued safe social distancing practices in place for those who have to attend the workplace. However, we would like to assure you that we do not anticipate any disruption to our normal service to you. Please find details of this outlined below:

Honesty Stall
Our Honesty Stall in Tenterden will continue to operate as normal with potatoes and firewood stocked outside. Contactless card payments can be taken during office hours (Mon-Sat, 9am-3pm) and outside of these times envelopes are left by the door for you to place cash payment in and post through our letterbox. During office hours we can also give you access to other products in our range including Strong Stoneground Wholemeal Flour, Cold Pressed Rapeseed Oil and Wild Game. Please Note: Our busiest periods tend to be from lunchtime through the afternoon, if you would like to avoid these times we recommend visiting in the morning. We would also like to ask that customers do not enter our building - there is a doorbell outside if you wish to get our attention with hand sanitiser next to it for your use.

Online Orders
If you're self isolating or having to shield please consider our home delivery mail order service. All of our Potatoes, Cold Pressed Rapeseed Oil and Strong Stoneground Wholemeal Flour are available to order online for delivery to your doorstep. Please find more information on our website: www.thepotatoshop.com.

Local Deliveries
We are also offering a local home delivery service for members of our community who are self-isolating or shielding. If you would like to order any of our products for yourself or a vulnerable family member or neighbour please get in touch by either calling us on 01580 766 866 or emailing potatoshop@morghew.com.

Please Note: Although the weather at this time of year is favourable for potato storage we do not spray them with growth-inhibiting chemicals in store so they will want to grow. They will keep well in a cool, dark and dry place for a few weeks - please don't buy more than you can eat in this time.

Dear Game Shooter,

Another day, another change to the restrictions on shooting. BASC is now reporting that following further 'clarification' from Government, shoots are again able to offer socially-distanced two-gun accompanied rough shoots to local people - this because Government now accepts that rough shooting is a permissible form of exercise.

So, having recently deleted all our remaining availability for January, we have now relisted it all again.

Accompanied Walked-Up Shooting

So, for the remainder of the season, we are able to offer socially-distanced accompanied walked-up shooting for teams of two guns (or more if members of the same household or support bubble) who'd like to spend an informal and relatively inexpensive day on this unspoilt Estate.

Accompanied by one of our gamekeeping staff, guns enjoy a day's walked-up and rough shooting on what is a fully stocked, fed and keepered Estate. Quarry includes unlimited pigeons, crows, squirrels and four pheasants or ducks if shot on one of the upland ponds, per gun.

Days end with a duck flight on the Estate's marshland reservoir, for which we make no promises but where there is also no bag limit. £200 plus VAT per gun, with a 10% surcharge for Saturdays in January.

Given the need for social distancing, guns need to drive around the Estate in their own cars and maintain a safe distance from other guns. Given the fine condition of Estate roads, there is no need for guns to bring a 4x4. We don't recommend it, but a bicycle will get you around quite comfortably.

Looking further ahead, perhaps the most surprising success of the last season has been our pigeon and vermin season tickets, which have allowed competent guns to perform crop protection shooting over the course of the spring and summer. As a result, we have started a mailing list of guns who may wish to purchase a main Estate (1500 acres) pigeon and vermin season ticket covering the period February - September 2021 inclusive. If this could be of interest to you, please make contact.

With best wishes,

Dear All,

Just a short note to let you know our plans for the lockdown month of November and the remainder of the season.  For the purpose of this exercise we are assuming that things will return to ‘Tier 1 normal’ on Wednesday 2nd December. If the lockdown is extended further, then I guess we’ll lose the rest of the season…

Driven Shooting

We’re obviously going to lose the driven shoots on Saturdays in November, beginning tomorrow.  To try to make up for this, we will run two midweek driven days on Wednesdays 2nd and 9th December.

If you have booked one or more pegs on any of the November driven days, please let me know by email whether you wish to book either of these new dates as a replacement.

If you have not booked any November pegs but wish to attend any of the new December shoots, please let me know also. I will give first refusal to guns who booked for November, but I know that many of our guns cannot get away from work midweek.

In the event of oversubscription, I will draw lots to allocate pegs and let individual guns know the outcome. These replacement days will be covered by the same risk-sharing arrangements that I have discussed previously, although of course they will only apply once to guns who book their replacement December driven shoots. After ten days or so, I will list any remaining pegs on www.gunsonpegs.com.

Rough Shooting

Obviously, I’m keen to keep some of the rough shooting going during November, and I’m relieved that the legislation does allow this. Please call me on 07802 609 661 for the detail.  However, in a nutshell, we can offer rough shooting on two separate pieces of land to two teams of two guns – or more than two in the event that guns are all from the same household or the same support bubble, and have made a short journey to reach us.

I hope all this is clear, and I look forward to hearing from any of you who are affected by the driven shooting changes – or wish to try rough-shooting during November.

With best wishes,
